It is highly resistant to corrosion and extremely hard. The centre layer of the blade, the so-called core of the knife blade, is sharpened at an angle. The core of the knife is made of Japanese VG-10 steel, which has a Rockwell hardness of ~58±2 HRC. The VG-10 core is the 67th middle layer, protected by 66 additional layers of steel, which not only protect the more sensitive core, but also create a distinctive design.
